Come to our open mic on Monday at Sound Fix!
2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Thursday’s Tip: Summer heat can warp the sh*t out of an acoustic guitar. $5 can buy many things. Turkey sandwich. Glass of beer. Toothpaste. A dozen stamps. But you’d be hard pressed to find a CD for that price. In the hopes of alleviating extraneous pressure, there exists the 2007 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition (WLSC2007) finals compilation CD, recorded at the Luna Lounge in November of 2007, featuring live performances of the 9 songs that propelled the 9 finalists to the summit of the contest. Record label representatives, music journalists, and industry professionals decided that these songs excel in songwriting, lyrics, vocals, originality and are exceptionally performed. A glass of beer only lasts a short while, but not music. Click HERE to buy a copy of The Fourth Annual Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition 2007 Compilation CD!

2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open!
Get a copy of the 4th Annual WLSC2007 Compilation CD! Wednesday’s Tip: Rhyming is overrated. (Photo of Craig Chesler by Emily Rawlings) This evening in the upstairs lounge at Pianos another foursome of powerhouse singer-songwriters will be performing at Resonance for admiration, respect, and even blood. Although not quite a gladiator match, the show is bound to entertain, with performances from Mandi LeBlanc, Craig Chesler (pictured), Adam Tao and Cuomo. Craig Chesler is coming back to the stage at Pianos for third time (once performing as a duo with WLSC2007 finalist Kelli Rae Powell), bringing with him an abundance of catchy, upbeat pop songs, a big, expressive voice, some of the finest ukulele playing in town, and if we’re lucky his signature polka dots.

Resonance is at Pianos Upstairs tomorrow + FREE!
2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Tuesday’s Tip: If you build it, they will come. The beginning of the week can be hard. That’s why there exists vodka to put in your Cheerios and Radio Jezebel to put in your ear (warning: do not ingest orally). Radio Jezebel is updated every Monday, featuring two songs by performers participating in upcoming Jezebel Music events. This week there’s “123 Stop” by the Postelles (pictured) and “When The World is Round” by Battery One Dollar, both of whom are playing BANDS on July 19 at Fontanas . If you didn’t have enough coins to pay for that morning cup of coffee, or you ran out of Absolut, these upbeat tracks should do the job. “123 Stop” is a retro pop punk song in the vein of The Clash, Cheap Trick, and the Strokes; “When The World is Round” rings a similar bell, but with a quirkier hint of early Magnetic Fields and T Rex (and a cool breakdown in the middle). So, seriously, stop drinking vodka before work. Radio Jezebel loves you more, and costs less.

Resonance is at Pianos Upstairs every Wednesday!
2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Monday’s Tip: Writing a song a day keeps the demons away. Tonight at Sound Fix, in addition to the Monday night Jezebel Music open mic Songfair, there will be a CD Release party for the compilation of the 2007 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition Finals (WLSC2007). From a pool of over 600 singers and songwriters, 9 were chosen to perform live at the Finals, taking place at Luna Lounge in November of 2007. Pure mathematics alone deem these songs and performances to be extra ordinary. Lucky for all of us who love great songs and outstanding performances, this final round of the WLSC2007 was recorded and transformed into a compact disc for our listening pleasure. At Songfair tonight, the CD will be for sale, and a handful of the finalists themselves will perform. Come to Sound Fix at 7pm tonight and start the week off right.

WLSC2007 Live Finals Record Release at Sound Fix on Monday!
2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Saturday’s Tip: There’s a line between telling stories and telling lies. (Resonance review by Jeff Goncalves)
(photo of Carl Creighton by Lippe) As with every Wednesday night, this past Wednesday brought a foursome of talented singer-songwriters to the upstairs of Pianos. Beginning the night was Jezebel mainstay, Edward Gorch, otherwise known as Born at Sea. Gorch brings a country-tinged voice and well-crafted songs, covering a wide array of topics including being in arms reach of the devil, abandonment, and heartache. This tendency to write darker-themed songs became a humorous topic of conversation between the audience and Ed, who had to defend his songwriting style. Continuing in the folk style, Kyle Gilbride hit the stage next...

Consignment is at Galapagos July 12 + FREE!
2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Friday’s Tip: Listen to Dubstep. (Picture of Olentangy John Atzberger by Robert Teten) The Jezebel Music open mic on Mondays at Sound Fix is called Songfair. Wiktionary’s definition of fair as “a community gathering to celebrate and exhibit local achievements” hits the nail right on the head, particularly regarding the gathering this Monday, June 30, which will double as the CD Release Party for the compilation of the 2007 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition Finals (WLSC2007). The CD has 9 songs total, including prize-winning performances from Olentangy John Atzberger (pictured), Jeff Malinowski and Feverfew, as well as the outstanding songs from the other six finalists, all recorded live at the Luna Lounge. Throughout the night at Sound Fix, we’ll be treated to performances from a handful of these finalists. And of course, non-WLSC2007 participants are more than welcome to sign up and play as well! The community gathering and exhibition of local achievements continues.

Resonance is Upstairs at Pianos Tonight + FREE!
2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Wednesday’s Tip: Never having broken a string is not a good thing. Aside from the excellent chicken sandwich and decent beer selection upstairs at Pianos, not to mention the non-existent admission price, one other rather significant reason to come to Resonance tonight is the music itself (duh). Tonight, as every week, 4 acousticesque performers will perform for the happiness of our eardrums: Born at Sea (aka Edward Gorch), Kyle Gilbride, Carl Creighton, and Matt Singer. Tonight’s bill is particularly well matched, and promises to unfold like an expensive 4-course meal, which in this case happens to be FREE. Just one of the talented songwriters on the roster is Kyle Gilbride, a particularly quiet and serene singer, songwriter and acoustic-guitar-plucker. Gilbride’s restrained vocals and delivery match perfectly with half strummed/half picked guitar parts, delicate melodies, and especially introspective and perspective lyrics. If you like Modest Mouse, Damien Jurado, and The Acorn (and Bright Eyes) Kyle Gilbride will bring you happiness.

Resonance is upstairs at Pianos on Wednesday!
2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Tuesday’s Tip: Illegalize the Vocoder. Need something new to listen to? Radio Jezebel is updated each Monday with two new songs by artists performing at upcoming Jezebel Music events. This week on Radio Jezebel is “Nightword” by Born at Sea (pictured) and “Scary” by Matt Singer. The composers of both are performing at Resonance, a lo-watt showcase of four performers taking place weekly on Wednesdays upstairs at Pianos. These songs are rather opposite: “Nightword” is a softer finger-picked acoustic ballad, filled out with lush cello and lead singer and songwriter Edward Gorch’s heartfelt voice and insightful words. “Scary” is a playful, lyrically driven folk song in a more traditional singer-songwriter style, with a pop rock underbelly and whimsical, modern-culture-minded lyrics. At Resonance tomorrow there’s a good chance both songs will be performed, good times will be had, and that guy selling the blinking light necklaces will work his magic.

Come to our Open Mic at Sound Fix tonight!
The WLSC2008 is Open! Monday's Tip: Auto-tune is worse than steroids.
(Consignment review by Jeff Goncalves)
(Photo of Dynasty Electric by Stephanie Noritz) Greeted by the pond that leads into Galapagos' main space and the great music DJ'd all night by DJ Luca, my worries were appeased as I found a packed house very early into the night. Energy was the name of the game, as all three bands turned up the volume and didn't let up all night. The first band to hit the stage was Fan-Tan, a Brooklyn based band that has roots in North Carolina. The quartet played a familiar form of indie-rock, lead by the singer/guitarist's hyper-speed playing and excellent rhythm section. Playing selections from their new EP, the band kicked off a night that had many more great things to come.

Come to our Open Mic at Sound Fix tomorrow!
Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Sunday's Tip: Saxaphone = NO. (Picture of Bryan Dunn by Zach Lewis) Resonance last week was a family affair. Performing were two brothers, one couple, two finalists from the WLSC2006, and there were multiple guest appearances. OK, so "family affair" is an exaggeration but you get the idea. First up was Chris Farfan, performing a solid set of 12-string-acoustic-driven classic-rock-influenced jams, with his brother Jorge delivering atmospheric, digitally-delayed leads on classical guitar. The brothers were joined by Alice Stopkoski (significant other of Chris) singing back up, who herself was the third performer of the evening. Alice performed an intimate, soulful set, joined by Briana Winters and Chris Farfan on backing vocals. Performing between Farfan and Alice was Bryan Dunn (Bryan and Alice were the 2nd and 3rd place winners, respectively, of the 3rd Annual WLSC), who is not related by blood or in a relationship with anyone in attendance, but is well known by all.

Come to our Open Mic at Sound Fix on Monday!
Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Saturday's Tip: The player piano is from Lucifer. Tonight the June BANDS show is at The Delancey in the LES. You might pretend that you have something to do tonight, but we know better. We know there are some items in your fridge in desperate need of re-organization, and your lovely hair must be blow-dried, and your dog walked, and there's some test you have to study for. But seriously, we know you're like: music lovers. And there's no better night than Saturday to see a rock and roll show. At a show called BANDS, you can expect to not only find ensembles of performing musicians, but a damn good time. For the pleasure of your ears and eyes there are 5 acts performing this evening: Last Known Settlers, Silence The Bird (pictured), Emanuel & The Fear, Red Robot, and Morning Code. Blow dry later. Tonight we rock.

The 2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Thursday’s Tip: Tooth pulling is the new tattoo. Do you wish that you could freeze and explode? Jason Drake wishes that you could freeze and explode. He wishes that we ALL could freeze and explode. And he's going to preach his gospel tonight at Union Pool. Drake is the one-man force behind Cassettes Won't Listen, our Jezebel Feature Artist for June. Also on the bill are Whole Wheat & The Action News, Boys & Girls Club, and Zigmat. Tickets are $8. That's a steal for this much great music. Be there at 8pm for all the action, folks! We'll see you tonight!

June Feature Show this Thursday at Union Pool!
The 2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Wednesday’s Tip: Broccoli is a good source of irony. Bryan Dunn has been busy lately; even when he goes on a live show "hiatus" he manages to not go on hiatus. Currently finishing up his new record, maintaining one of the more thoughtful myspace blogs in the scene, and going electric as a sideman for numerous artists...yeah, Dunn's been busy lately. Tonight, the talented songwriter who snagged a top spot (2) during the 2006 Williamsburg Live Songwriting Competition keeps on trucking at Resonance with fellow winner Alice Stopkoski. Bookending the bill are Chris Farfan and Warren Malone. Music starts at 7pm and it's FREE to get in. See you there!

June Feature Show this Thursday at Union Pool!
The 2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Tuesday’s Tip: Don’t steal songs. September 2005 Feature Artist Creaky Boards have recently pointed out that Coldplay’s new single "Viva La Vida" sounds a lot like one of their songs, coincidentally titled "The Songs I Didn’t Write". Creaky Boards believe that they had seen Coldplay’s lead singer and songwriter Chris Martin in the audience at one of their 2007 CMJ performances, and more so, Martin has been quoted as saying: "We look at what other people are doing and try and steal all the good bits. We steal from so many different places that hopefully it becomes untraceable." But a Coldplay spokesperson has stated: "Viva La Vida was written and demoed in March 2007, which is more than six months before this band claim Chris went to see them!" We'll let you decide for yourself.

Come to our Open Mic at Sound Fix on Monday!
The 2008 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Sunday’s Tip: Rainy weddings and broken strings are good luck. Resonance is like a talent show in a series of four performances, except instead of spoiled kids without a clue, the singers, musicians, and songwriters the perform each Wednesday upstairs at Pianos are very much in the know (which is to say they’re pretty damn awesome). At the June 11 Resonance, Chris Maher’s lyrics alone were enough to entertain. In both form and theme, they’re a head-and-a-half above the rest. Although Maher often talk-sings (hammering home the words) at moments it becomes clear that he’s also a great singer, but prefers to tastefully hold back for the sake of something to say. James Cutrera is a talented guitarist, gifted singer, and strong performer, writing acoustic rock/pop songs with intricate, adventurous guitar interludes. Miwagemini is a small woman with a big voice and wide array of strongly written, distinct songs. Armed with significant vocal vibrato, electric guitar, and an accordion player, Miwagemini performed pleasantly dark, intimate songs that could be described as a mix of Paris and Jeff Buckley with an avant-garde edge. And last but certainly not least (actually the first to perform) was Chris Kiehne (pictured). Click “Read More...” to read about Chris Kiehne:

Brooklyn’s Most Awesomest Open Mic Monday at Sound Fix!
The WLSC2008 is Open! Thursday’s Tip: Sunscreen, people. There are some bands who leave North Carolina and move to New York. Sure they don't have as much time to practice, but they're smack dab in the heart of the Big Apple with a million opportunities to rock out! Then there are bands who move from New York to North Carolina. Sure it's quieter and they'll work longer hours at a day job, but somehow they'll end up with more money to buy equipment and more time to practice. You think we're just making this up? Ask Fan-Tan this Saturday night at Galapagos. This Brooklyn-based group with "roots in Chapel Hill" has a new EP out that they will no doubt play selections from at Consignment. Ask them about the NY-NC theory! And have fun this weekend! - The Management

Brooklyn’s Most Awesomest Open Mic Monday at Sound Fix!
The WLSC2008 is Open! Wednesday’s Tip: Gabriel stole the cookies from the cookie jar!
Liars are all around us...behind that tree, under that rock. Chris Kiehne and Chris Maher, whose sets bookend Resonance tonight at Piano's Upstairs, know all about lying. They are featured this week on Radio Jezebel. If you have a single ounce of hope in your heart, Kiehne's "Rachel Lied" is all downers and razorblades: the perfect song for when you need something to push you over the edge of that building. His vocal delivery is sweet and harrowing on this recording and hints of what we'll hear tonight. Chris Maher never lets his lovers hold him back from a good bought of clever wordplay. "How to Lie" is an ironic bid-thee-farewell with a bit of bile in the delivery and a healthy dose of optimism. Maher has a slew of songs like this; "Heather" snagged him a finalist slot in the 2007 Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition. These two songwriters are joined on the bill by James Cutrera and Miwagemini. See you tonight!

Brooklyn’s Most Awesomest Open Mic Monday at Sound Fix!
The WLSC2008 is Open! Monday’s Tip: The piano: where ballads go to die.
(BANDS review by Lauren Jackson)
Though the line-up for May’s BANDS show was an eclectic one, the atmosphere did not feel fractured or disjointed. The common thread throughout the evening’s performances, which included Ohio-based Camp Loops, Sarsparilla, and Americans, was the relentless energy that each of the bands possessed. Camp Loops (pictured) kicked off the night with their experimental, cacophonous melodies, layering vocals over vocals over synth sounds and various other bells and whistles that created a sound akin to Animal Collective and High Placed being tossed into a blender set to “puree” (and yes, the blender’s sounds are meant to be a part of that comparison). It is quite possible that, after such an act as Camp Loops, something of a more traditional nature would have sounded pale and flat, but Americans closed the night with their straight, no-nonsense rock songs just as strongly as Camp Loops opened it with their zany, multi-layered ones. Americans left nothing to be desired; their songs were tight and simple, and provided a refreshing nightcap to end the evening’s performances and prime a crowd of hipsters to let loose into the streets and trendy bars of Williamsburg for the hours to come.

Brooklyn’s Most Awesomest Open Mic Monday at Sound Fix!
The WLSC2008 is Open! Saturday’s Tip: Blame the drummer, even if you don’t have one. Resonance at Pianos upstairs on Wednesdays would not be complete without him: the guy who each week tries to sell crazy light-up necklaces from a black plastic bag. His method is simple: dangle the blinking rubbery accessories in front of a person trying to watch a performance, and wait patiently for the prey to bite. These crappy, obnoxious toys naturally sell themselves, because who wouldn’t want to look like an ambulance? Beats me. But what I can tell you is that last week’s “winner” - the performer who was awarded the blinking toy necklace light show - was Craig Chin. But as the many who previously received this honor, Craig kept on, singing about hotdogs, spaceships, rainbows, and breakfast. (pictured: Accidental Seabirds)

Resonance at Pianos Upstairs on Wednesday - FREE!
Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition is Open! Wednesday’s Tip: If you’re going to play a wrong note, play it loud.
Resonance is back like clockwork tonight at Pianos Upstairs. Kicking things off: Matt Dorrien of Missing Manchester has a a wonderful, wonderful voice. He walked into the Jezebel Live Audition a few years ago and sold us on the spot. It's great to have him back at Resonance. His songs are well-crafted, 70s singer-songwriter fare; Cat Stevens if you're too cool for school, James Taylor if you think music snobs are ridiculous. Dorrien hints at both in the very best way. Not to be missed...In another corner of the universe is Craig Chin, who crafts geeky songs about hot dogs and skeeball. The vocal melody in "The Universe Boat" reveals his love for Robyn Hitchcock (the cosmic, cryptic title is a giveaway as well). His most recent release, Home Recording for Fun or Profit, is a CD that you must pick up tonight if he has some on hand. It throws all his hits into one charmingly lo-fi collection. Chin and Dorrien book end the evening. If you come to see both of these great writers, you'll also be able to catch the fine Zachary James Dodds and quirky Accidental Seabirds. See you there!
