A Yeasayer “Take-Away”
IN THE TUBE
Although uncalled upon to do so, I offer further evidence that Brooklyn’s own Yeasayer is basically one of the best bands ever. An excerpt from their Take-Away Show for La Blogotheque, the Yeasayer boys here perform brilliant near a capella versions of “2080” (the deadly single from their debut, All Hour Cymbals) and “Tightrope,” a version of which appears on the recent superstar compilation Dark Was The Night. “2080” is, of course, stellar here. It would be difficult to do this song damage in any environment, and here, with a room of willing participants acting as ragtag chorus and howling along with the chorus, it’s pretty epic. The true highlight, however, is “Tightrope.” The studio version is one of – if not the – highlight of Dark Was The Night, but this feels to me the definitive version. It features only piano and a motley orchestra of hand clappers and stompers, but is a revelation of grandeur. Throughout, too, you can’t help but appreciate the fact that everybody just looks so damn happy.
