VIRTUAL JUNGLE
Until the election cycle last year, Twitter had eluded most of the web-cruising public. The 140-character “tweet” limit threw many people off, and others questioned the need to broadcast themselves constantly. Nonetheless, Twitter persevered and has now become one of the primary social networking sites on the Internet.
Even though Twitter launched several years ago, the site has only recently become a ubiquitous cultural phenomenon. Everyone in the music community seems to have a Twitter feed now, including radio stations, music labels, full bands, solo musicians, and even music festivals.
Given the proper treatment, Twitter’s popularity was inevitable. After all, Twitter is one of the best free communication tools ever created. Twitter gives users an outlet to broadcast anything they want, as long as they keep it within the character limit. Artists like Trent Reznor frequently share Internet links with fans. Willie Nelson uses Twitter to respond quickly and often to his listeners, often just to thank them. Dave Navarro and The Album Leaf post pictures via TwitPic.
