Suckers | “Easy Chairs”

IN THE TUBE
Since entering the blog radar a few months ago, Brooklyn’s Suckers have been simultaneously entertaining and confounding. The cover of their self-titled EP, released in April, pictures a gold-jacketed hipster who bares a striking resemblance to Diplo, and “SUCKERS” is emblazoned in a font that would suit a Santigold album. Their MySpace profile picture shows four guys wrapped in what looks like those aluminum window shades you keep in your car, drenched in green smoke that may have been ripped directly from the 70s re-release of Reefer Madness. Their MySpace itself is hideous: framed purple boxes set against a trippy montage of strawberries, fingers, flowers, and gold light.

All of this would make sense if they made music that was even remotely suitable for a club, a rave, or if they were openers for the Dead. Instead, they make crackling art-pop that begs to be played at a bonfire or driving around at night. It’s quiet, engaging, and shows a lot of promise.

Which brings me to the video for Suckers cut “Easy Chairs.” Here, the guys aren’t outfitted to rave, and we get fairly normal glimpses of their heads. Their bodies have been replaced with insects and fish and the camera zooms in and out on computer-generated images of leaves, lights, water, and other LSD trips. The video, admittedly, rules, but…why, Suckers? Why are you toying with us? How are we supposed to see you? Are you Allman Brothers lovin’ hippies? Major Lazer bumping hipsters? Or is this all just a tease; a band in a seeming identity crisis whose music is as grounded and comfortable as this. Are we the suckers?

(Sidenote: Where the hell did they get the budget for this thing? Weezy’s videos don’t even look this fly.)
