NYC Subway Musicians to Perform Songs from New Oasis Album

Oasis fans commuting in Manhattan will be in for a treat tomorrow, as over 30 subway performers will cover solely Oasis songs from their forthcoming record, Dig Out Your Soul (available October 6). Specific locations include Grand Central, Penn Station, Times Square and Astor Place. A complete list of subway stations and performers can be viewed at nycvisit.com/oasis.

The performers are volunteers from MTA’s Music Under New York Program. Oasis themselves will be teaching the musicians the songs Friday morning, and according to the band’s label, one of the Gallaghers might be making an appearance during one of the performances.

The event is being filmed and made into a documentary to accompany Dig Out Your Soul - footage of the performances will be available at nycvisit.com/oasis.

(This guerilla-esque advertising campaign was originally intended to promote both the band’s upcoming release and their Friday evening show at Terminal 5. However, due to an onstage attack on guitarist Noel Gallagher early this week and resulting rib injuries, the band has been forced to cancel some performances.)

Upcoming Releases

ConorOberst_ConorOberst.jpgPerhaps the most significant release coming in the near future, especially for indie/folk music, is Conor Oberst’s self-titled album. This will be the Bright Eyes’ mastermind’s first solo album since 1996. Oberst will still have a backing band, this time in the form of the Mystic Valley Band. Listening to lead single "Danny Callahan" and a few other tracks, it doesn’t seem like a far-reach from his past work, but still a solid effort. For those who cannot wait for the August 5 release, you can stream the entire album on conoroberst.com/album.

Other noteworthy upcoming releases for the end of summer/fall include David Byrne/Brian Eno Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (8/18), Calexico Carried To Dust (9/9), Ray Lamontagne Gossip in the Grain (9/9), Ben Folds Way to Normal (9/30), and Oasis Dig Out Your Soul (10/6).
