Weekly Review
This week, unlike last, there didn’t seem to be any particular headline hogs. (Clever pun, huh?) No, Wilco’s camel on the cover was talked about just as much as Coldplay’s growing copyright calamity, “Dirty Projectors” appeared in print just as many times as “David Byrne,” and Coyne was referenced just as often as Coxon. There was the crazy Connecticut campus shooting, which probably deserved even more attention than it was given – our condolences go out to Ms. Justin-Jinnich and all of her family and friends – but otherwise, things seemed to be pretty calm on the music-news front. Maybe everyone has been on their best behavior in anticipation of today, that day when we celebrate the women who have always told us to eat our vegetables, clean up our rooms, mind our manners, and…

knock you out?

Yup, even L.L. listens to his mama. Happy Mother’s Day, moms!

Creaky Boards | Brooklyn Is Love

bis_bigAt this point, “The Songs I Didn’t Write,” the opening track from Creaky Boards’ new album, Brooklyn Is Love, is more famous for what it isn’t than what it is. Namely, it’s not the song “Viva La Vida,” by Coldplay. A few months before the album’s release, Creaky Boards leader Andrew Hoepfner posted a video on YouTube in which he claimed that Coldplay had plagiarized the melody for “Viva La Vida” from the, coincidentally, aptly named Creaky Boards tune, “The Songs I Didn’t Write.” After a storm of YouTube hits, write-ups in the blogosphere, and random TV mentions, Creaky Boards was suddenly sort of famous. Of course, the two songs don’t really sound that much alike (Joe Satriani, who later claimed “Viva La Vida” was ripped off from him, has a much stronger case than the Boards, I’m afraid), and it seems to me that Hoepfner probably posted the video, in part, as a preemptive strike against folks who might think that he ripped off Coldplay when the album came out – though a lot of earnest bloggers may disagree with that assessment.

With all this hullaballoo about who copied who, what gets lost is Creaky Boards’ music. I mean, the Boards don’t really sound anything like Coldplay. Hoepfner has always been very forthcoming about his love for Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, so it’s no surprise that pretty much everything he writes and records comes out filtered through their sensibilities. “The Songs I Didn’t Write” more closely resembles a track recorded using Spector’s Wall of Sound than it does anything on the Top 40. The song does have one thing in common with today’s pop music – how easily it gets stuck your head. And even though it’s the result of some silly and irrelevant controversy, I would say that the song is worthy of the extra exposure it’s getting.

Coldplay to Embark on World Tour

Coldplay2.jpgStrange to think the gangly fellow walking along the beach seeing yellow in everything around him is the frontman of what is now one of the world’s biggest bands, Coldplay. In order to keep the vibe alive, the British foursome are about to embark on a rather immense tour to support their latest effort, Viva la Vida (2008). Perhaps after the tour’s concluding performance in Dublin, Martin and company won’t want to look at anything yellow ever again.

Read more to see the full list of dates, including recently added U.S. shows in late October.
