Built to Spill | The Normal Years
HIDDEN GEM
Built To Spill
The Normal Years
2006 | K Records
Doug Martsch’s Built To Spill has always seemed like a momentary peek into Bizarro World to me. The group’s intricate and abstract guitar breaks place Built To Spill somewhere firmly in the mix between proto-grunge and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, and their wandering jams ingratiate the band to the throng of dejected Phish fans looking for their next favorite distraction. Think of the “classic” Built To Spill sound as “thinking-man’s metal,” or “clear-headed psychedelia.” Plus, Martsch sings like he’s from another planet: high pitched, sure, but where Axl Rose often sounds like a woman, Martsch sounds like he’s Martian.
