It's here folks. Starting this Friday, September 15 and running
through Friday, Saturday September 22, Jezebel Music will host the
Third Annual Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition. There is
a lot of talent out there, no question: millions of guys and gals
with instruments sitting in their rooms writing songs about one
theme or another. Catchy melodies abound, achingly talented voices
carry out of windows and through apartment walls, jaw-dropping arrangements,
mindbending lyrics, eyebrow-raising technique, head-turning originality…everyone’s
got something. The WLSC aims to find the artists out there who have
the most of everything. Eggs in every basket, a full deck of talent,
the whole shebang.
It isn't easy working the scene these days
(it never has been). Any writer who has played a club knows the
drill. They spend hours working on the words, weeks tweaking the
melody, months rehearsing, only to play in front of a loud, distracted
room of people who are too busy talking to distinguish between them
and the weekend warriors. Here at Jezebel Music we take pride in
being discerning listeners. Once a year, we give 150 musical souls
a chance to be heard and potentially rewarded for doing what they
do best: putting on a good show.
We've listened carefully to countless
submissions, read over lyrics, paid attention to those chord changes,
dynamics, instrumental hooks, tapping our feet, whistling, and chuckling
along the way. The 150 songwriters who will be performing at various
venues throughout Williamsburg are the fruit of our labor. No matter
who grabs the grand prize this year ($4,000), it will be clear to
everyone in the audience that there are more than one, two, ten,
thirty artists worth paying attention to in this competition. If
you are a live music fan looking for a new batch of talent to make
note of, there are the places to be:
9/15 – The Lucky Cat ( Slideshow)
9/16 – Laila Lounge ( Slideshow)
9/17 – Matchless ( Slideshow)
9/18 – The Trash Bar ( Slideshow)
9/19 – Union Pool ( Slideshow)
9/20 – Laila Lounge ( Slideshow)
9/21 – Galapagos Art Space (Semi-finals) ( Slideshow)
9/22 – North Six (Finals) ( Slideshow)
Those of you who have had a chance to hear the compilation CD from
last years WLSC or attended the finalist competition at Galapagos
know the caliber of songwriters who end up in the final 12 slots.
The selection of songs is phenomenal and should be required listening
for any artists who wants to know how hard they'll need to work
in order to make a dent in the scene. This year the level of excellence
will be just as high if not higher. Regardless of who takes the
cake home, the top 12 finalists this year will also be on a compilation
CD due out next year.

Ever the energetic host, Tom Rhodes (a fantastic
songwriter in his own right) will host the event this year and the
competition will be topped off by a performance from the always fantastic
and bombastically gifted All Night Chemists.
The magnitude of this event cannot be understated. Say you saw them
when. Be there!
